Undermount Drawer Boxes vs. Side Mount Drawer Boxes
You finally made the call and are designing your dream closet (or pantry). You selected everything; your layout, material, color, hardware, design etc. but we bet there is 1 thing you may have forgotten to think about… how will you mount your new drawers?
If you’re anything like me, before I got into this industry I had no idea you can mount drawers multiple ways. Depending on what is important to you, a certain mounting style may make more sense. We offer you two types of ways to mount your cabinets – undermount and sidemount.
So why would you want to choose one mount over another?
Look: Undermount drawers will offer you a very clean and simple look since your hardware will be mounted under the drawers. Sidemount drawers will be visible on both sides of the drawer, every time you open it up. If looks are important to you, we recommend you go with undermounts.
Space: Undermounts will give you more usable space and allow for full extension of the drawer. Sidemounts will slightly encroach on space because they’re mounted on the frame and side of the drawer. If you want more space, we recommend you go with undermounts.
Noise: Undermount drawers use ball bearings and rollers which help reduce the friction and noise. Sidemounts can be noisier due to the friction you experience when opening and closing the drawer, however this hardware can include softclose mechanisms to cut down on the noise. Our recommendation, both are good options, especially when you add a soft close option to the sidemount.
Weight capacity: If you plan on having heavy objects in your drawers, we recommend that you go with sidemount hardware. Sidemounts are often stronger and can handle a lot more weight than their undermount counterparts.
Installation: If you’re planning on installing drawers on your end, one thing to keep in mind is that undermounts require precise alignment and measurements, sidemounts are attached to the side of the cabinet and are often easier and quicker to install. Our recommendation would be to consider sidemounts if you’re installing yourself and are a novice.
Price: A very important factor for any home project is cost. While both mount options are great, if you are looking for a cost effective option, sidemounts are typically more affordable.
Both mount options are a great option, depending on what is important to you. If you’re still not sure which mount to choose, our design team would be more than happy to give you a recommendation!
